Could you explain this?

I was watching on YouTube Pres. Nixon's resignation speech and in that speech he mentions the Middle East, and how for about 20 yrs they felt America was their enemy, but now (meaning the 70's) they felt America was a friend. My question is what did Nixon do to help patch up the relationship between the U.S and the Middle East?
